Scissors: KAI Hand Embroidery / Goldwork Embroidery
KAI 4 inch hand embroidery scissors are the perfect all purpose hand embroidery scissors. They have sharp pointed blades and are light weight with comfortable molded handles.
The KAI scissors are made in Japan out of professionally honed stainless steel. I personally have a pair of these scissors that I have used for many years in lots of needlework techniques including cutting metal threads for goldwork and they have maintained their sharpness.

Needle Threaders
Wire needle threaders are for all sizes of needles but are most useful for fine needles as it enables you to thread the really small eyed needles easier.
The metal wire loop of the needle threader is threaded into the eye of the needle (much easier than threading in a strand of thread), the thread is then threaded into the wire loop of the threader and then the wire loop and embroidery thread are pulled back through the eye of the needle, the thread is now threaded into the needle.

8 Inch Stretcher Bar Frame and Thumb Tacks

I recommend the stretcher bar frame to work my hand embroidery kit in because the frame is quick to assemble and the fabric stays taught in the frame. The frame comes with brass thumb tacks and a tack remover. The frame can be used over and over so if you purchase more than one of my kits you can use the same frame.

There are 19 pages of instructions which are written with the beginner in mind. There are step-by-step diagrams and colour pictures to guide you through the embroidery. You may purchase the instructions as a hard copy or as part of a kit or as a digital download – PDF File. Also included is a downloadable PDF with 10 pages of instructions on how to finish the embroidery ready for display.
The Miniature Treescape embroidery makes a great companion embroidery to the Miniature Landscape embroidery.
The fabric comes with the design hand dawn on so you do not have to be concerned about transferring the design yourself and the threads come on a numbered thread template so you know exactly which colour to use on the embroidery. There are 4 DMC cotton thread colours used in the embroidery. The landscape is outlined in pearl purl couched down with a single strand of black YLI silk thread.
Each stitched tree comes out slightly different making the embroidery fun and unique to the person who stitches it.
Finishing: There are a variety of methods that the landscape embroidery can be finished and displayed. The landscape can be displayed in the traditional fashion in a frame, with or without a mat. The fabric is 9 inch square so there is lots of fabric around the design for framing. Or the landscape can be finished on a small piece of acid free board and displayed on a miniature black easel (see picture in photo gallery) or it can be displayed in a frame so that it is raised above a coloured mat (see black frame in photo gallery). There is a finishing kit with the miniature black easel available to purchase and there will be instructions for finishing the embroidery in the fourth PDF file lesson.

Needle painting can be challenging so I suggest learning the technique from one of my kits rather than from a book as you get much more instructions in my kit rather than a from book which usually only has a few pages of instructions for one design.

You can get the PDF files only which you can download from my website and you supply the tools and materials to stitch and finish the embroidery, below are some important things to consider if you going to provide your own supplies.
The instruction booklet that normally comes with the kit will be emailed as a PDF file, you will need to print off the design from the instructions and trace it onto suitable fabric.
It is very important that the fabric is very closely woven such as 200 threads to an inch cotton fabric or silk Shantung fabric or silk Dupioni fabric that have no slubs as it can interfere with the stitching. If it is a thin cotton fabric such as broad cloth, I suggest using two pieces together so there is heavier foundation to work the stitches on. If you are using silk fabric I suggest putting a cotton fabric behind for support.
You cannot use a fabric that is used for cross stitch or blackwork as you will not be able to work the stitches close enough together and it will spoil the look of the embroidery.
You will need four shades of embroidery cotton thread such as DMC or Anchor for the green grass. You can use different colours but they should shade nicely so no large jumps in shade/tone. You need a finer thread for the tree as the embroidery cotton is a bit thick. In the original embroidery black YLI silk embroidery thread is used.
The embroidery is outlined with over stretched gilt super pearl purl. You do not have to outline the embroidery but I found it looks more complete with the outline and the pearl purl outline is also good for neatening up unevenly stitched edges.

Holly PDF File
Free instructions for the Holly 2-Sided Embroidery.
The holly is a great design for learning how to do 2-sided (reversible) embroidery, in which the back looks like the front.
I provide the instructions for free in the form of a PDF file with 13 pages of diagrams and instructions for working the holly. No part of the instructions can be used for commercial purposes, profited from, published in print or on the internet without permission from Tanja Berlin.
The photos of the holly displayed in the hoop is stitched by Melody McMath and the design is reduced to 80% to fit in a 3 inch hoop.

Jacobean Tree with Bird Kit – Discontinued
The Jacobean Tree with Bird is an advanced crewel surface embroidery technique. I am discontinuing this kit.
If you are new to the technique you may want to try a smaller design first as this design is large and will take some time to stitch.
The design uses traditional Jacobean motifs and is stitched in 14 traditional Jacobean colours in Appleton crewel wool on traditional linen twill fabric. The design comes printed on the fabric so you do not have to be concerned about transferring the design yourself.
