The Mountmellick Corner Design is an Irish white work hand embroidery technique in which heavy white cotton threads are used to work surface embroidery stitches creating a floral design on a heavy cotton satin jean fabric, which has a smooth and satin surface.
This is a great technique for any level of stitcher as the stitches are easy to work, there are 15 different surface embroidery stitches on the embroidery.

Needles – Chenille
Chenille Needles have a large eye and a sharp point and are great for ribbon embroidery and as a plunging needle for goldwork embroidery. Chenille needles can also be used for heavy surface embroidery such as crewel and Mountmellick. I carry a variety packet in which the needles range from size 18 (largest) to size 24 (smallest) and I sell the No. 18 chenille needle separately for goldwork embroidery.

Erasable Pen – Water
The water erasable marking pen has a pin-point tip that produces a very fine line. Use the pen for drawing embroidery designs onto fabric. When the embroidery is complete the blue pen line can be washed away.

Needles – Crewel Embroidery
Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.
Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.
Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.
For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.

Traditionally the technique was used to decorate household coverings such as cushion covers and table cloths as the the fabric and threads are durable and can be boiled to be cleaned.
This is a great technique for any level of stitcher as the stitches are easy to work, there are 15 different surface embroidery stitches on the embroidery.
The instruction booklet that comes in the kit has lots of diagrams and instructions to guide you through the stitches. The fabric comes with the design hand drawn on so there are no worries about transferring the design. The embroidery can be washed afterward removing the design lines.
