Needles – Crewel Embroidery
Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.
Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.
Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.
For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.

Crochet Cotton for Padding
A soft cotton thread (Bernat crochet cotton) is used to pad narrow areas on goldwork designs such as leaves, stems and branches.
The crochet cotton should be waxed first with beeswax so that it is coated and stiff and can be sewn down single or in bundles of two, three or more strands, sewing down the strands with a single strand of polyester sewing thread.
Metal threads such as purls, bullions and Japan threads can be sewn over the crochet cotton padding raising the threads and giving the embroidery a dimensional effect.

Thread – Silk Soie D’Alger
Au ver A Soie is the manufacturer of fine silk thread and yarns in France since 1820. Soie d’alger is a seven ply stranded silk, each strand is twisted. The silk comes in a 5 meter pull skein which means you can pull the thread out without removing the label.
I have dark yellow (gold), light yellow (gold), grey (silver), brown (copper), bright red, dark red and black which can be used for couching down metal threads and for silk shading when doing goldwork embroideries.

Kid Leather
The smooth kid leather has a metallic shiny surface except the “Copper Head” which has a matte surface. The kid leather is fairly stiff and is not appropriate for molding over very dimensional surfaces.
The wrinkled surface kid leathers come in gold, silver and pewter. They are slightly softer than the smooth surface leather and more mold-able.

Fabric – Muslin Southern Belle
The Southern Belle muslin fabric (Calico in European terms) is a 100% cotton fabric and is light cream in colour.
This wonderful fine quality muslin fabric has a 200 thread count (regular muslin fabric thread count starts at 70) and no flecks, specks and slubs which is common in muslin fabric, it has a very clean look. It makes an ideal ground fabric for needle painting and other forms of surface embroidery. I use the southern belle fabric in my needle painting kits. It can be used as extra support behind the ground fabric when working goldwork and as a backing fabric for silk fabric.

Sorry I am not mailing the silk fabric to the USA at this time.
The silk organza fabric is a fine transparent fabric that is strong, non-stretchy, non-shiny and non-glossy unlike some organza fabrics. It makes a great fabric for shadow work embroidery as the embroidery becomes the feature and not the fabric.
The embroideries in the pictures opposite are worked on silk organza fabric in herringbone stitch.

Gold Couching Thread – Metallic
The Gold No. 1 Japan Thread is a synthetic thread with a metallic look and will not tarnish.
Please Note: The manufacturing of the No. 1 Japan thread has changed and the thread has the appearance of a fine flat foil instead of a fine cord. The thread is still strong enough for couching down metal threads.
Used for couching down other metal threads such as Check Thread, Flatworm, Japan Thread, Large Back Passing Thread, Rococco and Standard Lurex Thread.
Can also be used in combination with other embroidery threads for surface embroidery, counted thread embroidery, weaving and lace making to add sparkle.

Fabric – Lugana Black 25 Count – Sale
Lugana fabric is a blend of 52% cotton and 48% rayon.
The fabric has even weave threads so that stitches/patterns will work out more regular than on an uneven weave such as linen fabric. It has a nice smooth and firm surface so that when the embroidery is complete the viewer sees the embroidery and is not distracted by the fabric.
I have few pieces of Black 25 Count Lugana fabric on sale as there is a fold crease down the center of the fabric that may not wash or iron out. Excellent value if you intend to cover the entire surface with stitching.
